Marel, player of Lokeren, is on the way home after 5 years playing professional football. This was written in an article of newspaper Frettabladid. Marel had big problems with his knee injury the last year, and wishes now to cancel his contract with belgian team Lokeren.
"I got an agreement with lokeren management about cancelling my contract. we only need to get clear about some small things, and I hope to get eveything done next week. Then I will directly go home to Iceland." told Marel the paper Frettabladid.
Marel is one of 4 Icelanders playing in Lokeren. Belgian club Moeskroen tried to buy him some days before the summer transferperiod closed, but Marel said he does not want to risk a new injury, he wants rather to go home to Iceland and get there a new life and new footballchances.
M
marel is 24 years old, and started his carreer in Breidablik. He played very good in Breidablik, season 2000 he scored 3 goals in 5 games, and was then sold to norwegian club Stabæk for 30 million icelandic kronar. After a good season in Stabæk in 2001 a lot of clubs were interested in buying him, but first in January 2003 he was sold to Lokeren/Belgium. In Lokeren he met Runar Kristinsson, Arnar Gretarsson and Arnar Vidarson, 3 Icelanders who played already in Belgium. Marel had a fixed place in the team, playing left side. Lokeren made it very good in the season 2003, and made it up to third place. The year after (2004) did Marel play 27 games, and Lokeren ended at 11th place.
This actual season he didn`t play because of his knee injury, a deterioration in the knee cartilege, but he is recovering fast and will soon become ready for action.. Marel played 14 games for Icelandic national team.
"I am really looking forward going home! I think my body can easily play a few more years back in Iceland, because it’s the pressure here that is the reason this isn’t working. When I’m back home I’ll look into these issues. I know that Breidablik is interested in me, and that is not wrong to hear."
"I have rarely or never been in a better shape physically, and been really careful about what I eat and how I train. It will surely be a great difference to get back to Iceland but I’m not on my way back to the Icelandic league just to stick my toes in the air like some have done upon return. I’m in this for real." He is closing with "It is no fun going home and then getting nothing new to do, that is no fun at all." And he expects to get into Icelandic football in season 2006.
"Like i said before, I just have to get my contract cancelled. I got a lot of help from my advisor and lawyer Olafur Gardasson. He advised me very good. He talks clear and frankly, and only in this way you get your things done. I must say, he is always there for you, no matter how good or bad it is going."
